Maverick City Music has been making waves in the urban gospel scene since its inception in 2018. Founded by Tony Brown and Jonathan Jay, the music collective comprises artists from diverse backgrounds. Together, they create genre-crossing music that Billboard had trouble categorizing. During an interview, singer-songwriter and Maverick City Music leader Chandler Moore mentioned they tried to have their debut album categorized as gospel. “And we were like, ‘Why is this gospel? Why do you categorize this as gospel?’ It’s not even anywhere along gospel lines.” Although Maverick City Music’s style is untamed, almost an undomesticated version of gospel music, the songs are written with the church in mind. “We’re not trying to make a statement or anything,” Raine says. “We’re just actually doing it. We’re bringing people together. And what we’re realizing is that we’re less divided than we think.”
Although unorthodox, Maverick City Music’s works received critical acclaim. In 2021, they received a Billboard Music Award for Top Gospel Album and two GMA Dove Awards for New Artist of the Year and Worship Album of the Year. This 2022, they were nominated for four Grammy Awards under categories: Best Gospel Performance/Song; Best Gospel Album; Best Contemporary Christian Music Song/Performance; and Best Contemporary Christian Music Album, which they won at the recent 64th Annual Grammy Awards.
While results from the Grammy are still pending, Maverick City Music’s schedule is jam-packed this summer with a co-headlining tour with 16-time Grammy Award-winning artist Kirk Franklin. The sing-songwriter has sold over 13 million albums and was dubbed the “Reigning King of Urban Gospel” by Variety. Aside from his numerous Grammy Awards, Franklin has won 22 GMA Dove Awards throughout his career. The former leader of Kirk Franklin and the Family has also released nine studio albums, two compilation albums, and seven number 1 hit singles.
